About Wands

A wand is a tool, an aid, an instrument, a conductor, a conduit, a transmitter.

A wand can be an extension of oneself and a magical weapon. It directs, focuses, projects, and amplifies intentions and energy. It can also attract energy.

The effectiveness, power and purpose of a wand largely depends on the one using it and their intentions.

The strengths and properties of a wand will depend on the materials it is made of, and a wand can be made of just about any material.

There are many types of wands, numerous variations of the like, and the names vary across cultures and eras.

The use of wands dates back to prehistory. Wands were then and are used now as ritual implements, establishing a connection between the spiritual and material.

When choosing a wand, it is important to find one that calls to you. Picking it up, assessing the feeling, the energy and weight of it will help you decide if it is right for you. If that is not possible, consider your intentions and goals when using the wand compared to the properties of the materials your wand might be made of.

There are many other factors to consider that might help point you in a direction as far as choosing the materials your wand is made of, but finding one that resonates with you will ensure your ability to work with it successfully.

When you have chosen your wand, it is generally good practice to cleanse it of any negative energies or previous influences that it may have picked up before it came to you. However, you may choose not to cleanse it. You might find that you want to build upon the energy it already possesses, especially if it is an heirloom. Cleansing can be done in several different ways, and it is up to the practitioner to choose their method. Addressing the elements is one way to give you an idea.

Always be mindful of the materials your wand is made of in choosing your method of cleansing and take appropriate cautions when needed.

Next, you begin to form a bond with your wand. Meditate with it, learn about the materials it is made of. Some meditate on the ruling spirit of the kind of tree their wand comes from, some sleep with it, some keep it on their person as much as possible, to further enhance the connection, to share and harmonize energies. You may wish to add embellishments and personal touches to your wand, be creative. Lastly, before using your wand in practice, you might perform a dedicating ceremony, charging it with energy from the sun or the moon, or consecrating it.

There are many ways to form this bond, and again, it is up to the practitioner to find their own path in doing so.
