African Blackwood

African Blackwood, is also called Mozambique Ebony or Senegal Ebony, but is not a part of the ebony family. It belongs to the rosewood family, though it doesn’t really share any of the same characteristics of the other rosewoods. The darkness of the wood is of a deep, deep purple.

African Blackwood draws from the elements of water, air, and spirit. It has a masculine energy and its alignment with Saturn is strong. Saturn is known to block all other energies. It represents the end of cycles and the energy of the underworld.

African Blackwood works as conduit between the spiritual and physical realms. These aspects make African Blackwood a perfect implement for communicating with the dead and any magic relating to death. It would also serve one well in removing barriers around other forms of communication and prove a helpful aid with creative and intellectual shifts.

Alder

An unpredictable, fiery wood, willing and able to evolve with its user. The Alder tree is associated with battle and steadfast survival. It is associated with the masculine and possesses a strength that is legendary. Alder helps one face things they have been avoiding, soothing nervousness and anxiety.

Alder groves are inhabited by fairies. The sacred trees are said to be gateways to the Otherworld. If one wishes to contact supernatural beings, Alder can be used to start the conversation. Be wary of what doors one might open, making sure to close them.

Amboyna

Amboyna wood does not come from a specific species of tree, but it is most commonly wood of the Narra tree. Narra grows all over Southeast Asia and is known by many names, Malay padauk, Papua New Guinea rosewood, Philippine mahogany, Andaman redwood, Burmese rosewood, Narra and Asana in the Philippines, Angsana, or Pashu padauk. The Narra tree is a sacred tree in the Philippines, it stands as symbol of toughness, durability, and resilience.

The Narra tree is all around a useful and beautiful plant but is now considered endangered. Beyond being desirable for woodworking, the Narra tree offers medicinal benefits from pain relief to cancer prevention. It is also a source of dye and gum, it is used in shampoos, and produces beautiful and fragrant flowers that attract and nourish bees. One might conclude that this wood would also lend itself to operations of healing, beauty, and vitality.

Being related to Padauk, Amboyna has a similar fiery and chaotic energy, but is much more feminine leaning. One must be solidly grounded to work with the shifting energy this wood possesses. Amboyna offers powerful amplification comparable to that of Ebony but because of its chaotic nature, it can be a challenge in practice.

Ambrosia Maple

Ambrosia Maple gets its name from the pattern and discoloration caused by the Ambrosia beetle and the Ambrosia fungus that the beetle brings with it. It is a softer Maple wood and has a higher sugar content than the harder Maples.

Ambrosia Maple leans toward the feminine and draws from the elements of Earth, Water and Spirit. It is nurturing and providing, an excellent choice for protection spells.

Quite useful in workings of moon magic, Ambrosia Maple does just as well in operations concerning travel, learning and decision making. It is especially talented when used in workings to bring about change or dealing with change, as well as spiritual healing.

Ancient Kauri

Ancient Kauri or Swamp Kauri comes from Kauri trees that were buried by an act of nature, at the end of the last Ice Age in New Zealand’s North Island. The peat swamp preserved the wood perfectly, these unearthed ancients are between 40,000 and 50.000 years old and in limited supply. Kauri trees live to exceed 1000 years old and some of the ancient ones were nearing 2000 years old before they were buried. Tragically, the modern Kauri are dying from a disease that restricts the movement of water and nutrients through the tree, essentially starving it. It can spread through even a single speck of dirt and as the human guardians of the Kauri, measures are being taken to slow the spread, but it is a collective effort and the responsibility of each person who enters the forests of New Zealand.

According to Māori tradition, each Kauri is protected by kaitiaki tāngata, the human guardians, and by its own wairua, its spiritual guardian from Io Matua Kore. The Māori believe all trees come from the spiritual realm and are bestowed by ancestral spirits to this realm and humanity. As a child of Tāne, Rangi and Papa, and ultimately lo Matua Kore, the Kauri receives its own mauri, or life-force, at its conception from Io Matua Kore. The Māori treasure the giant Kauri trees as bridges between heaven and earth.

The Kauri produces itself a protective barrier to prevent the growth of parasitic plants and vines that would do it harm. It regularly drops its branches and sheds its bark. This layer can be 5 feet deep, allowing the Kauri its own personal space necessary to grow. Personal space is vital to personal growth and an instinctual survival mechanism. The ability to release what weighs us down, to define our boundaries and trust our instincts is how we survive, it takes courage and decisive action. Staying true to oneself, finding that truth and clarity is how we can establish healthy space for growth.

The sacred Kauri reminds us of these things and encourages positive change while repelling the negativity and helping us to create protection against that which would do us harm. This ancient wood is spiritual in nature, connected with the earth, energetic and open to possibilities. It would aid one well in any workings concerning self-care, protection, core truth, healthy living, letting go, courage and wisdom.

Apple

Apple trees are widely recognized as a symbol of fertility, abundance, joy, peace, harmony and love. Apple wood is a powerful instrument in wand form and will bond with its user. Ruled by the planet Venus, its energy is feminine, grounded and bountiful. There, it is said that every tree has a spirit and some trees can house many spirits. The spirit has a voice which the careful listener can hear and even understand if they know the language of the spirits. The voice must be preserved carefully by those that choose to work the wood. The wood worker wants to keep the spirit of the tree in the wood, so that the spirit will protect and aid those who use the wood in whatever form it has been fashioned. The appearance changes, but the spirit remains. Trees in a forest have a collective spirit, powerful enough to be revered as a god.

Birch

Gabon Ebony

Hawthorn

The Hawthorn is part of the Celtic triad of “Oak, Ash and Thorn”. It makes for a powerful wand but requires patience and readiness for discovery from its user. It will open the practitioner to insight, offer clarity by clearing the mind of confusion and filtering negativity. It is perfect for developing the self in general, self-confidence, and creativity.

Hawthorn is also a tree of happiness. Stimulating love and forgiveness, it will aid those in times of depression, anxiety, stress, anger and troubles concerning love. It is a traditional wood for workings concerning love and fertility. Hawthorn is excellent for purification, charms, and concealment magic as well.

Hawthorn has powerful ties to the Faery. It has strong associations with the masculine and the element of Fire; however, it has also been referenced in association with the feminine and the elements of Air and Earth. It is one of the only plants ruled by both Mars and Venus.

Hazel

Holly

Kingwood

Koa

Koa is both distinctly and separately, feminine and masculine in its energy. To use it effectively, the practitioner must recognize this duality and be comfortable with the ebb and flow of its’ energy.

Leopardwood

A beautiful wood from the heart of Australia, Leopardwood draws energy from the element of earth.

It is full of positive energy and will seek a partner who has an especially creative nature. Leopardwood wands are particularly useful in spells of protection, creation and opportunity.

Lilac

Lilac is associated with the feminine and Venus. It will deepen spirituality, foster peace and happiness, and drive away evil or negative energies. Different sources associate it with the elements of Air, Water or Earth.
